Captain - Ollie

Ollie originates from Suffolk, UK and first found his sea legs in a dinghy as a 5 year old and his land legs on a rugby pitch at school, he spent his teenage years as captain of the Sixth Form rugby team and as a racing endorsed dinghy instructor.  Having left the rugby field behind to pursue his love for sailing Ollie gained work experience as a Watch Leader on a 42m classic SuperYacht in Monaco before returning to the UK.

Ollie’s sailing career really took off when he was hand selected as one of fifteen sailors from the UK, under 24 years of age, to be part of the British Keelboat Academy. Here Ollie was on a national squad, receiving coaching from some of the top grand prix sailors in the world, igniting his passion for yacht racing. Whilst training at the academy Ollie started working for Oyster yachts in Ipswich as a commissioning skipper. Here he developed his skills in boat maintenance which together with his method of safe practice and customer relations allows guests to sit back and relax with peace of mind during their time on board.

Ollie has sailed over 50,000 NM including 4 transatlantic crossings as well as navigating the Arctic, and holds his commercially endorsed Yacht Master Ocean qualification and STCW10. Having worked on Firebird since it was first splashed in 2016, his knowledge of the vessel and its cruising areas will ensure your time on board Firebird is safe and seamless.

Chef - Mel

Mel, also from Suffolk, caught the sailing bug from Ollie when she joined him for a transatlantic crossing as chef. Having achieved an Honours degree in Chemistry, Mel left her day job in the office as a scientific publishing editor and swapped cooking up potions in the lab for cooking up delights in the galley.  After acquiring her STCW10 she joined Ollie to work on the water and her love for food and the sea has expanded. She has a great passion for cooking local, seasonal charter menus and has been fortunate to explore Mediteranean and Scandinavian cuisines from her time as Chef onboard Firebird, having been with the boat since it's build. Mel also trained in Nice in Silver Service and Interior Management.

As well as yachting, Mel has a great love for yoga and is a fully qualified instructor. Expect as much yoga as you would like on board or on the beach as she is always itching to get on the mat and pass on her knowledge and energy to others. Mel has experience in teaching clients of all ages and enjoys guiding both beginners and experienced guests through their yoga practice.

The safety of all guests onboard Firebird is of the upmost importance to the team and as such Ollie and Mel each have extensive offshore medical and specialist cold water survival training certificates.

First Mate - Tim

Tim is from Falmouth, UK, and has spent his life immersed in the ocean. His childhood was spent sailing and racing on the family boat, where his passion for the sea was sparked. The summer of 2008, aged 18, saw him qualify as an MCA/RYA commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore and within a couple of months become a Yachtmaster Sail Instructor as well as an Advanced Powerboat Instructor.

Skiing was also a major part of Tim’s upbringing, when his summers were spent at sea the winters were up in the mountains. From the time he could walk he had skies strapped to his feet, on family holidays and then alpine racing from the age of 12, which he continued to his early 20’s. He also spent time living in Courchevel, France working as a Ski Guide. At Plymouth University, whilst studying for a BSc in Environmental Science, Tim took to the sea again and trained as an HSE Commercial Scuba Diver and is also a PADI Rescue Diver. So be it your first time in the water or if you are an experienced diver, he will be there to lend a hand.

Subsequently, having worked on an 47m motor yacht, ensures that his level of service, be it in the water or on deck or even on the mountain, is unparalleled.

Stewardess - Holly

Holly is from Cornwall, England and spent her childhood enjoying the delights that Cornwall has to offer. Holly’s love for the sea started at a young age, first with gig rowing and into her teenage years surfing. Her passion for exploring the world and surfing has taken her to many different countries including Australia, Morocco and Sri Lanka. After escaping the Cornish winters, she returned back home where for 5 years she managed the front of house team in a busy beach side restaurant. During her time at the restaurant Holly trained to become a Professional barista.

She discovered the yachting industry when she met Tim. Coupled with her experience in hospitality and his as a Yacht master instructor, they decided to explore the opportunities that yachting had to offer full time.

Holly has obtained her Powerboat level 2, VHF short range certificate, Level 2 food and hygiene as well as STCW10 and looks forward to making your stay on Firebird a memorable one.
